EU chemicals exports up more than 2% in January-May, imports mostly flat
EU chemicals exports rose 2.2% in the first five months of 2021, year on year, but imports barely rose, statistical agency Eurostat said on Friday.
The traditional EU surplus in chemicals trade narrowed slightly, but remained healthy at €74.1bn.
International trade in chemicals bucked the trend for other petrochemical-intensive manufacturing sectors such as machinery and vehicles, where imports and exports rose by double digits during the period, year on year.
The increases in imports and exports of manufactured goods matched those in primary goods; in energy, where the EU has always been a net importer, imports rose by nearly 20%.
Exports of energy also rose sharply, but from a very low base.
In the first quarter of 2021, the EU’s international trade in goods took a hit from lockdowns in its major economies to contain the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
From April, however, the economy has gathered steam, which is starting to be reflected in figures for the trade in goods.
